THE HENDRIX FLAT
CLIENT: HANDEL AND HENDRIX IN LONDON
Interpreting the Hendrix flat, lived in by the legend for a few months spanning 1968 and 1969, could have been a daunting brief. We developed a concept for a ‘micro-history’, aiming for exhaustive depth over this short period, with a context-setting film and exhibition. This catered for both superfans and Hendrix novices.
The displays cover seven themes, from the then-somewhat-seedier locale to the iconic events that took place when Brook Street was Hendrix’s base, and encompassing details from the domestic to the technological. We researched, wrote and produced the content including three AV installations, and recreated the bedroom from scratch using a wealth of photographic and documentary evidence. Over 150 sourced and recreated artefacts ranged from replica bedspreads and Epiphone guitar to quality street wrappers and a pre-1968 penny placed as a weight on the turntable arm.
